Julie Baker of Bascomb Elementary School

A 28-year educator, Ms. Baker teaches third grade at Bascomb ES. She joined the school's faculty 24 years ago after teaching for Hillside UMC Preschool and Cobb County Schools and has taught preschool, first, second, and third grades as well as teaching early intervention program students.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
I have always wanted to be a teacher. When I was a little girl, I made my parents pretend to be my students. Once I started school, I loved it, and my desire to be a teacher was reinforced by many amazing teachers over the years. While in college, I thought I wanted to be a school counselor, but once I started teaching, I knew I would always be a teacher.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?
The most rewarding part of teaching is building relationships with students and their families. I have been blessed to teach multiple siblings within the same families. I love seeing students and families outside of school — at sporting events, recitals, or even while shopping in the neighborhood. Being invited to the graduation parties of former students is truly unmatched.

How do you elevate the excellence in your classroom?
I elevate excellence by building relationships and getting to know my students. By understanding my students and their needs, I can guide them in setting goals and becoming responsible for their own learning. I also encourage them by celebrating their successes so they can build upon them. I strive to help my students believe in themselves and become confident problem solvers.
